Born in Australia in 1959, Wallis came to America with her five sisters as part of a traveling, singing, all-girl group known as The Wallis Sisters. They did well in America, but eventually some of her sisters wanted to return to their native Australia, which ended the group. Josephine met artist Peter Wood in the early 1980’s, and they’ve been a couple ever since. In 1998, tired of waiting tables, she picked up a paintbrush. Her early work was definitely inspired by Peter’s, but over time she has developed her own style and technique. For instance, Peter paints with his fingers, while Josephine uses a brush, permitting more versatile detail. Her subject matter ranges from Buddhist iconography to Southern Blues singers, who in her mind have achieved the same level of enlightenment as the bodhisattvas.
