Born in Australia in 1959, Wallis came to America with her five sisters as part of a traveling, singing, all-girl group known as The Wallis Sisters. They did well in America, but eventually some of her sisters wanted to return to their native Australia, which ended the group. Josephine met artist Peter Wood in the early 1980’s, and they’ve been a couple ever since. In 1998, tired of waiting tables, she picked up a paintbrush. Her early work was definitely inspired by Peter’s, but over time she has developed her own style and technique. For instance, Peter paints with his fingers, while Josephine uses a brush, permitting more versatile detail. Her subject matter ranges from Buddhist iconography to Southern Blues singers, who in her mind have achieved the same level of enlightenment as the bodhisattvas.

Lamar Sorrento, nom-de-plume of James Eddie Campbell, has been a guitarist and all-around music lover almost since he was born on top of a Tennessee mountain, and he began painting his musical heroes in 1992. His art career took off in 1993, hardly a year after starting from scratch. A special idol of Lamar’s is the gypsy jazz guitarist, Django Reinhardt, but his vivid portraits span the legends of blues, country, and rock & roll as well. A favorite among both art collectors and musicians, his paintings appear in museums and galleries, private collections, on several album covers, and on funky restaurant walls around the country.

Pamela Rosen was born in Hartford, Connecticut. She grew up wanting to follow in her father’s footsteps, as a wallpaper hanger. The family business was her objective, but her father said it was for the men in the family, so she decided to find her own creative outlet. Pamela began as a print maker and after moving to New Orleans, began using glitter as a medium. She soon found that glitter was much better and exhilarating than conventional painting on canvas.

Her methods are fairly simple, and with 6-plus years of experience behind her, she is the defining Folk Artist using glitter as a medium. She uses anything from copper shavings, make-up, and powder paint mixed in glue to get the shades and tones she is looking for. “Glitter Girl” and her husband now have their own shop, Pamela’s Living Room, in New Orleans’ historic French Quarter.

Mark Bercier is a native of Crowley, Louisiana, and now a resident of New Orleans. Mark’s defining inspiration was a roadside billboard of an enormous peach with the word “watermelon” beneath it – much of the work he does with symbols and pictures has its origins in that observation. For instance, if he paints a fish, he is likely to call it “Sun”.

Mark is well known for his “Black Baby/White Baby” pieces: in these he writes and then crosses out the adjectives “black” and “white” to illustrate that they are both babies, regardless of color. His work is about diffusing the labels that society casts on individuals.

Peter Wood grew up in the projects of Cleveland, Ohio during the late forties and early fifties. Peter is a practicing Buddhist and a fervent, proselytizing anarchist (a tradition inherited from his parents, probably ignited by their many trips to Mexico). He paints with his fingers, spreading oil on the canvas, diffusing the paint from the broad black figure outlines, creating vibrant fields of transparent and luminous colors.

Peter’s first memories of the African American and Blues experiences he depicts were of attending a concert of Cleveland native Charles “Cow Cow” Davenport with his father in December of 1955. His father also regularly took the Wood family to hear Reverend Glenn T. Settle’s choir, “Wings over Jordan” at the Gethsemane Baptist Church. Peter says, “those old musicians were true revolutionaries in their own way.” And saints too, he decided, adding Blues figures to his extensive iconography that already included Buddhist and Latin American heroes.

C.M. and Grace Kelly Laster are a Kentucky husband-and-wife team. In addition to creating art of their own, they are ardent supporters of the effort to preserve Paradise Gardens, the legacy of the late folk art legend, Reverend Howard Finster. The Lasters met Rev. Finster in the mid 1990s after returning from Chicago to their native Kentucky. C.M. and Grace were already artists when they met the man who would become their mentor, and years of Finster’s personal and artistic guidance bolstered their spirits and confirmed their resolve, inspiring them to launch an art ministry of their own. Although the Lasters’ styles and subjects are distinct from Finster’s in many ways, they share his vision of spreading joy through art. Favorite musicians and pop culture icons crop up everywhere in the Lasters’ work, much like Finster made use of Elvis as a vehicle for his message. The couple continues to use recycled materials and found objects in their art, and conducts Recycled Art workshops at schools, community centers, and Paradise Gardens. They also manage the annual Howard Finster Fest at Paradise Gardens.
